If it's not interchangable but "looks" the same, Doesn't a 460 look like a 428?

Now Chevy made a Big Block 409 In 1964 and Came out with a New Big Block in 65 in which no parts would interchange with the old big block. Sounds about the same but just looks different.

Again MY Opinions dont mean chit, I am just going off of what I read.

Comments:

You could get a 67 Coronet with a 383 -- low deck.

The 59 383 was the only year the 383 was a RB -- it became a low deck in 1960.

A 400 and a 383 are virtually the same engine. Displacement was increased because of the motor becoming a smog motor with cheaper internal parts. It is near impossible to tell a 383 from a 400 without looking at the numbers.

If Pontiac was putting 421CI non-rope-drive 61 Tempests in the hands of the public or the Racers -- than I apologize. My memory was 63 was the first year the Tempest was in Super Stock (Arnie the Farmer Bestwick), and that they didn't put the 326Ci into the Tempest until 1962. However, I'll defer to the Pontiac experts.

NMCA announced the Chevy Rat motor was an error, whacked my post giving my opinion, and then posted that I should call with these problems instead of airing them out in public.

Kahuna,

If you have a beef. You know who to call and how to use a phone. Airing it out here does nothing but agitate the people you are trying to influence.
I'm not sure that I want to run NMCA anymore. I need to look into my options and do some soul searching. I love racing NSS -- but I don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling with NMCA anymore. I hate every one trying to shut me up, and one-sided conversations.

Subject: National Muscle Car Association 2010 rules

January 13, 2010

For the record:

All of this season’s rule changes were initiated by NMCA; none by the NSSNA.

After reviewing the 2009 season, the NSSNA decided the issues/situations that had come up did not need to be codified but could be effectively taken care of by internal management.

For its purposes, NMCA decided it needed to address three issues formally.

1. 1961 Pontiac Tempest inclusion – The actual participation of and encouragement to future construction of more of this combination was seen by NMCA to be more of a long-term benefit than the possible detriments of inexact historical accuracy and appearance.

The NSSNA committee was asked to comment and after discussion, agreed.

2. Single 4-bbl AMX – The precedent and actual participation of this combination along with the precedent of allowing single 4-bbl carburetors for other combinations was seen by NMCA to be consistent with existing rules, with historical accuracy, and also a long-term benefit.

The NSSNA committee was asked to comment and after discussion, agreed but re-emphasizes its published preference for 2x4 carburetion.

3. Contingency decals – As a not-for-profit organization, the NSSNA has no financial interest in, and therefore no rules on this subject, and was not asked to comment.

As a matter of history, NSSNA points out that it was common practice to place decals on the vehicle’s entire body as the owner chose.

In addition, NMCA now has stated its published allowance of the Mark IV design (rat-motor) engines in 1959-64 Chevrolets was a typographical error and is not valid.

The NSSNA verifies the statement; this subject was not initiated or discussed by either organization.

The committee:
Doug Duell, Dave Duell Classic
John Grinwald, Nostalgia Super Stocks Inc.
Clay Kossuth, TexasOutsiders
Jim Netherland, NMCA NSS series
Bob Wilkiewicz, Nostalgia Super Stocks Inc.

Default Wagn

Would anybody get upset if I put a Rat motor in the DragnWagn. I could save some big $$$$$$$$. Just kidding, just got me an all new aluminum legal NSS Indy 540 inch wedge to power the DragnWagn! This thing made some sick HP on the dyno, cant wait till Flordia! Lets quit belly aching and get ready to do some racing! No race organization is perfect and I doubt anybody is out to make racers mad. We are lucky as NSS racers to have all the choices we have now as far as cool track and race organizations. Some of you will remember racing in 10 car fields and getting treated like ****, but will still showed up to race. So lets put big smiles on and get ready to have some fun! Thanks, Doug Duell

Hello Dan,

How's things? The wagons really came to be in 1963. They were A/FX cars with the 421 S.D. In 1962, guys began to put the V-8 into the 61 and 62 Tempests. All of the 61-62 original cars came with 4-cylinder engines that are a sliced off 389's, that made it somewhat easy to put the V-8 into that body. The real hot running cars removed the transaxle and put the big Pontiac rear end under them and the 4 speed transmission. We have a solid 1961 Tempest we are starting to build for NSS. There are 3 or 4 other 61's already set up for NSS, one is Gary Beamers black 1961 wagon that he raced last year at the Milan race. Our goal is to have this car complete this season, but as we know here, things usually take longer then you would think.

I may add to the fire by saying.......I am glad that my name was only mentioned in a reference to something...

This seems to be shaking out for all...........we will see

as for the AMX deal...I was against it then, in spite of my friend Don and others who run the things...put the twin 4s on em and lets go...a single carb..no.

Calvin..I agree with you 100%

Mark

Tempests, 61-63 look alike, all Pontiac V-8's look alike.... no big deal.

Rat motors and W motors are a different animal...No.

AMX, dual or single carb...don't matter, they came with both. BUT, in saying that, IMO, I consider this a 'pony' car, just like the Cuda. If 'pony' cars run in NSS, all other 'pony' cars have a reason to want in. If a 60's Mustang, Camaro, Cougar, Firebird, etc., whines to NMCA, they might just make a rule change for them!

Make your opinions known, then back your opinions with the greatest tool, your wallet. Run with who listens. Let's race!!!

Maybe it will be AHRA Gilliam, LA instead of NMCA Bowling Green, KY!
