the below are a couple of photos of Cracklin Jack after the wreck. Jack Nelson was selling the car (with trailer, truck, and golf cart) because he's lost his job -- I was potentially buying -- and wanted one last bonding with the car he'd built ten years previously.

His first pass was a personal best for the 4-speed car -- at 10.07.

The next pass had him get into his coolant and hit the right wall at over 120. It buckled the right front wheel (bending the K-Frame) and came back and pancaked against the wall again. The below photos really don't show how bad the damage is. He hit so hard -- that he ripped part of the seat anchors up and hurt his shoulders.

Milan Report Summary

Aug 30 Dave's Reports, NMCA Updates

The following is a summary of what happened with the NSS class at the NMCA race in Milan this past weekend. For more details — visit the forum — where a thread for Milan race was created and posted to by some of the people who attended. If you attended and would like to add your comments on the race — please do so..

The track opened at about 10AM on Friday. Time trials started at 3PM — and NSS cars were allowed up to three TT passes before 6PM.

26 NSS cars attended — but one had a wreck. Jack Nelson had “Cracklin Jack” make its fastest ever (since he built the car ten years ago) pass at 10.07 for the first Time Trial. However in the second Time Trial the car got into its own coolant (the cap was found mid track) at the top of the track and turned into the wall tearing up the front right corner including the right side of the steering. Jack tried to take it off the wall but the steering brought it back into the wall — pancaking the entire right side. He rode the wall until the car came to the stop. He hit with such force that the seat was cocked to the center and his shoulder were very sore when the car finally stopped. Sadly Jack was looking to sell the car, truck, trailer, and golf cart (to me) — but wanted to make one last Hurrah in it. The car is pretty well damaged (I’ll post photos on he forum later) and the package might be the right deal for someone. Contact Jack if you’re interested.

The first Qualifying pass for NSS started at about 7:15PM.

Saturday was blue skies and between 75-85. Actually that was the weather for the whole weekend — with it dipping to the 50s at night.

The second qualifying occurred at about 10:30am. Final qualifying was to have been at 3:30, but attendance was light — so the NMCA announced that there would be a bonus 4th Qualifying added at 2:30 — so we all got 4. First time I’ve seen it happen since I started running NMCA in 2007.

Well almost all of us got four qualifying passes. Scotty Jiles did another of his monster wheel stands and pancaked the oil pan, pickup and round bearings. He was running to Mancinni to get parts for the 3rd and 4th Qualifying.

The below is the 3rd round qualifying — we never saw the 4th.

The tree (below) was established and the first round began at 9AM sharp on Sunday.

Fast Forward — Brian Merrick won the event and it looks like Doug Duell is so far in 1st that he’s got a lock on the 2010 Championship before the St. Louis race is even run.

Speaking of St. Louis, don’t forget to check out the story of the Future of Gateway.

Again — there is more detail and opinions on the forum. Don’t forget to add yours.

Rumors – NMCA 2011 Tracks

Aug 30 Dave's Reports

The rumors have been flying on what tracks NMCA will be running next year.

One rumor is that Maple Grove is out. Nice track — but terrible draw and the PA State Police have been targeting trailers 28′ and longer, or with lettering — and giving tickets for no CDL.
Bradenton Sux — and all of the racers hate the track, the drive, and the sand in their carbs. Recent rumor was that Commerce, GA was going to replace it.
Then Zmax happened. Talk around the pits is that even combining NMCA and NMRA — the economics doesn’t work for Zmax. The event had the track and track personnel 100 times better this year than last year — but it still was a ghost town. Not enough racers for the far East tracks. So the rumor is that Commerce is going to take the place of Zmax. That might mean that replacing Bradenton gets put on the back burner (how about HRP or Gainesville for the first race!).
Gateway appears to be dead meat. Smart money is saying that they’ll announce their closure after the NMCA race at the end of September.
Word is that the bad luck on rain in Bowling Green in March/April might get that race moved to later in the year.
So by my count you have three races (Maple Grove, Zmax, and Gateway) going away, with Bradenton having racers wish it would go away — and only Commerce being talked about coming on board. I think NMCA has learned its lesson on East Coast races not drawing racers — so we’re safe from having that shit hole ATCO rearing its ugly head.
NMRA tested Houston last November, and they and NMCA are testing it this November. It isn’t a really fair test since they do it when most northern racers have their cars in moth balls and it is a non-points event — but maybe they’ll take that into consideration. You need a Southern track to start the year and end the year — and Houston Raceway Park is an excellent track — especially in March or October.

Gateway is no where to be found. That was their bread and butter. After Dover closed Memphis -- NHRA appears to not be taking any chances with them on Gateway.

They announced the end of NASCAR after their last race. I'm taking bets they'll announce the end of drag racing after NMCA's race.

Any takers?

Hi Everyone.
Looking for a pic/info on my Dads old C/A Crosley. My dad built this car around 1962. It was a 56 Ford chassis shortened 2'. Front end was 40's era Ford with the rear solid. Engine was a 312 with three duces.Drivers seat was in the rear of the car.Thes rear tires were outside the body, since the axle was not narrowed. Just a typical home-built car of the era built by a 20 year old kid then, LOL. Body was a 50-52 Crosley coupe, painted "Vintage Burgendy" This color was the burgendy used on Lincolns and 64 Thunder-bolts then. My Dad sold the car arround the summer of 65 I think to a neighbor Roy Holigan of Flint, MI.
Roy wasnt a racer, and sold it shortley therafter. Last we heard(years ago) a couple guys from Detroit were running it with a small-block Chevy at Detroit.
Would like to get any info/pics on the car if possible. Hopefully some Detroit local may know of it. it probably dosent exist anymore. But you never know. Maybe its in a field or barn somewhere???

Im going to my Dads Friday and will scan some pics and post them next week hopefully.
Anyone with info can PM me or reply to the thread. Heres my cell also.
Thanks.
With a trap speed of 115 I should be in the 11s at least. Car is Vortech supercharged with 522 RWHP and 477 TQ. I have played with the car on the street and don't seem to have the spinning problem if I slip the clutch and don't get too aggressive from the jump.
What should i launch at and how much will it cost me time wise . I was cutting 1.7 60s with slicks launching at about 4500 rpm. Can't afford slicks right now so that is off the table. Any advice gratefully accepted.

Making a half hearted effort to sell my car. Hate to see it go, but I think after today I have come to the realization that I am not ever going to be the guy that can travel across the country and make NSS races. Too many kids, too many commitments and races that are just flat out to far away for me to even try to make. It's a sad day around here.

If you know anyone interested in a super clean, super dependable and consistent car, send them my way. Legal for most NSS races except I think one series which insists on 2x4 bbls. Also legal for NMCA.

Thanks.

At Zmax last Sunday, Barb's car stopped at the end of the track. When officials came up to it to see what the issue was -- they found Barb badly hurt inside from the car's rear end breaking and the driveshaft coming into the car. Details are very sketchy and so I don't choose to speculate any further as I'd be talking out of my ass.

She suffered a lot of broken bones (quite a few ribs) -- but also very seriously and permanently injured her right elbow. She's had a couple of surgeries to try to fix it -- and the talk is that the doctors want to replace it -- but it may be too fair damage to do that.
Just reminder that drag racing is a dangerous sport -- and while I don't know the details of exactly what part and how it failed on Barb's car -- it should be a reminder to inspect the underside of your car often for broken, loose, or improperly installed parts.

Police Targeting Drag Racers

States In Financial Trouble Target Racers

<img alt="Michigan State Police Dodge...

States In Financial Trouble Target Racers

I recently read an article where states in financial trouble are writing double the tickets in the first half of 2010 than they had in 2009, as a way to generate revenue. The biggest tickets obviously go to bigger vehicle -- and so you have noted a many Sate Police in pickup trucks -- carrying portable scales.

Last year at the NMCA race at Maple Grove in Reading, PA -- quite a few racers with pickups pulling trailers larger than 28' feet (overall -- not just the box) were ticketed for not having a Commercial License. North Carolina were turning back rigs greater than 65' -- but recently amended their statute to allow going to and from races. Florida requires a permit, as does New Mexico. There have been complaints from New Jersey ticketing small race car trailers for weight violations and Kentucky for by passing weigh stations.

I've seen stings set up at race events and even rodeos and cattle shows -- ticketing pickups and small trailers not having CDLs, with the premise being that if they can earn a prize -- they're commercial.

The latest big sting appears to be the Michigan State Police and Indiana State Police targeting motorhomes pulling trailers to the tracks. Click here to see an 8+ page discussion on the topic. Troy Coughlin's Motorhome with a trailer was stopped in Michigan yesterday on the way to a IHRA race, the driver given three tickets for not having a CDL, over length, and another -- and the trailer is currently sitting in an impound yard.

Racer's need to heavily lean on promoters and tracks to in turn lean on the police to stop targeting recreational drag racers. Bruton Smith did this in North Carolina when racers going to Zmax were targeted -- and was able to have the regulations amended to allow for travel to and from a racing event. If something isn't done soon -- promoters and tracks will see a dramatic reduction in car counts.
