I have a 64 390 with a cruiseamatic trans. I have had a sporadic leak out the front seal. I have tried to keep track to get some kind of common history when it does this however up until now it has not been consistant. It has gone on for 3-4 years, however a couple of those years I didn't drive it much.
Now we come to this weekend. I drove it about 100 miles to Numidia Dragway (near my daughter's place) and ran one time shot and again started leaking so I stopped. It dripped for a while until I got to her place it had stopped. Then I drove 200 miles the next day to put her in a car show back home that I had ran the past 9 years before I moved. They were slow registering cars, so I sat in line 30+ min., sometimes shutting her off. Then she just plain puked at least four quarts of trans fluid. I pulled her over to the side so I didn't oil down the show field (the local highschool football field). I tried her an hour or so later, still leaking. About 2-1/2 hrs later I towed her to my parents. Then put 4 quarts of fluid and she moved fine and didn't leak. Borrowed one friend's truck and another's trailer and towed her 300+ mile home yesterday. When I loaded her on the trailer she didn't even leak a single drip.(Had some issues as she didn't want to shift into reverse, although she had been on a nose down slope.)
Had someone strongly suggest it was all caused by a clogged vent in the trans case. Has anyone else had this happen to them?
To really make matters worse, while she sat there outside the fence, a older lady tripped and fell against with her lawn chair, mashing the drivers side front spear and bending the fender edge right under the galaxie nameplate. It was an accident, but WOW. Fun weekend!
Thank you,
God Bless,
Ed

It may be puking the fluid out of the vent. That usually happens from overheating or aeration. You really first need to find out where the fluid is coming from.

Thanks to All,
I returned home late Sunday night with car in tow. Good to have friends! I unloaded it after work yesterday then had to fix my wife's car. (yea, as always, went down when I was away, ya have to laugh). Anyway I have not been able to remove the front cover and inspect. The fluid ran out from between the bellhousing and cover. It again did not leak a drop while unloading it and putting her away.
I am going to figure this one out as it's a long time and money before my race car will be ready and I have to improve on my day and half reaction time!
I appreciate all your help, this site is really awesome. Not a whole lot of Ford guys around here. I moved 300 miles last year so all my connections are gone too. The plus side .. have a good job, a new "understanding" wife ..... and just by chance ... in reaching distance of a lot of tracks!!!
That sparadoic thing has me puzzled and why I don't believe it's the seal itself. Usually they are bad or good, never seen one that will leak some of the times.
Front area leaks could come from a number of places, Front Seal, Front pump gasket or o-ring, even the torgue convertor itself can leak at the welds. the Cruse-o-matic had a bolt on bellhousing and it makes it hard to judge where it is coming from.
I am thinking the vent is on the top side of the case on a Cruise-o-matic and not in the bellhousing. If it mostly does it when hot, I am thinking it might have an internal problem and overheating.
Tell us what you find.

Hello Again,
I have not been able to get out to even look at my car as I have been working late and then had a string of evening commitments. However my friend who I borrowed the truck said this
"Ed, I told Steve Baker about your tranny "burping" problem and how it doesn't do it all the time. He thinks it's a classic case of a clogged casing vent. When cars sit for a period of time, Mud-dobber wasps tend to build nests in the vent cap which would cause intermittent burping of tranny fluid. Once the case pressure is relieved through the seal, the seal returns to normal and maintains a seal. He said some cars had a metal vent tube that could have been crimped and causing the problem too. If the seal still holds fluid except for the "burps", it probably doesn't need to be replaced. I hope it's something that simple."
I did a quick overview through my service manual and didn't see such a vent. I did see that it had a pressure regulator. What are the chances that would have failed. I also had a racing friend suggest buying a separate tranny cooler and that would solve most the trouble. (Something she could really use anyway). He thinks the heat made the seal leak then return after it cooled.
Doug, have you heard of either one happening? Has any one else ran into that?
If I can get this solved "semi-simply" I hope to run it on Aug-14th at Beaver Springs, they are having "Flashback Friday".
I have heard of the vents plugging up and causing it to leak.
I stole this picture off of the internet and added where the vent hole is. You can look and see if it is plugged up. It will be on the passenger side.
I got the picture from this webpage (to give the credit where credit is due) but added the vent arrows. It is a medium case cruise-o-matic which should be what you have in your car. http://www.supermotors.net/registry/media/136513_1
