| | A couple of years ago, I got my Dakota inspected in a different county. It was even insured in that same county but my address was in Harris. About 6 months later I got a letter from the county stating that my 'registered in Harris County' vehicle did not have a legit emissions inspection. I just told them the vehicle was on loan and insured in a different county and basicly to just bite me. I'm trying to replace my new junk with the older good stuff. Can't wait until the census people come knocking lol

| | Good for you! I nephew has everything done to his mother in laws address, 6 counties away.
Your insurance can get its panties in a knot about the insurance address. They want the $$$ because they think the risk is higher.
Sounds like Texas is getting like some other states. I wonder if it is a law?

| | Last time I got a car appraised it cost $150. That was in 1979 on my 64 Impala SS 409. I had to take it to the place where they did that. That was for the higher insurance I wanted.

| | *Black's Law Dictionary defines Fair Market Value as "The price a willing and knowledgeable buyer would pay a willing and knowledgeable seller, neither party being under duress and both having a reasonable knowledge of relevant facts..." Make sure you know all the relevant facts!

| | Talked to one of the gals at the tax office this afternoon. She said on vehicles 25 yrs & older, they go by the price you say you paid. I guess I'll find out for sure when I get the title paperwork sorted out.
Anybody in Texas do title work that you know is reputable? I really don't want one of "title companies" to do it, but might use an individual that knows the ropes. As of now, I'm trying to figure out how to do it myself.

| | And as far as I know the carfax kind of stuff only goes back so far. I don't think any car around 25 years old would be in the system. | | | | Senior Member | | Join Date: Oct 2008 Location: Republic of Texas

| | You are right, carfax does not... I don't think the other one does either.
I know it will not check any thing that is not the 17 digit number. A lot of older cars do not have that many. Some time in the '80 they were required to have the 17 digit numbers IIRC.

Is your car a state of Texas car? Was it registered in Texas? DMV does not give out info, but I did use a little service that has access to it. I do not know how far back it goes. I had the vin, license plate number. The plate was only a few years old.
I did get the old owner. The plate was from 2007, title from 2006 The name of the former owner, but no other info on him.
